Tour Overview
Discover the birthplace of Algarve Modernism.
Loulé is closely associated with Manuel Laginha (1919–1985), one of the pioneers of Modern Architecture in the Algarve. Together with Manuel Gomes da Costa and António Vicente de Castro, he introduced the ideas of the International Modern Movement to southern Portugal after studying under the influential architect Carlos Ramos in Porto.
This walking tour showcases Laginha's most remarkable surviving buildings, alongside works by João Campos and other architects who continued his modernist legacy. Reinforced concrete, elegant balconies, pergolas, ceramic screens and colourful tile façades give Loulé's architecture its distinctive character.
The tour also highlights the city's urban development and includes the monument to Duarte Pacheco, Loulé's most famous statesman and Minister of Public Works, whose vision transformed Portugal through ambitious infrastructure projects and the 1940 Portuguese World Exhibition.
Discover a side of Loulé - in 30 projects - that most visitors never see—where history, architecture and modern design meet. Starting at Casa Abreu and Silva in the center.
