Tour Overview
Discover some of the architectural legacy of Manuel Gomes da Costa (1921–2016), the architect who shaped the modern identity of Faro. During a career spanning five decades, he designed more than 300 buildings in the city, making Faro one of the richest collections of Modernist architecture in Southern Europe.
This self-guided walking tour presents 11 special project he made for the company Pires and Brito. The projects for this developer are special within M.G. da Costa's extensive oeuvre because the client had a greater appreciation for the architect's unique talent and therefore gave him more scope to showcase his spatial qualities.
Manuel Gomes da Costa was one of the three pioneers who introduced Modern Architecture to the Algarve, alongside António Vicente de Castro and Manuel Laginha. All three studied under Professor Carlos Ramos at the School of Fine Arts in Porto before transforming the architectural landscape of southern Portugal.
