Tour Overview

Discover the Modernist architecture of Portimão.

Portimão is the city of António Vicente de Castro (1920–2001), one of the three pioneers who introduced post-war Modern Architecture to the Algarve, alongside Manuel Gomes da Costa and Manuel Laginha.

After graduating from the School of Fine Arts in Porto under Professor Carlos Ramos, Vicente de Castro established his practice in Portimão, where he designed around 120 projects. His work ranges from private houses and apartment buildings to public facilities and urban planning projects, always characterized by simple geometric forms, functional layouts and a careful response to climate, sunlight and landscape.

This walking tour - 23 projexcts - presents his most significant buildings, together with other remarkable examples of Modernist architecture in Portimão and more. Discover how a new generation of architects transformed the city into one of the Algarve's most interesting centers of twentieth-century architecture and end up at the wonderful Art Gallery of Meinke Flesseman. Starting at the Munnicipal Museum at the harber.
