This plot was the location of the North Texas State Teachers College's "Vets Village". In 1946 after the end of World War II, 50 small units, termed "hutments", were constructed as a community to house returning veterans who enrolled as students at NTSTC. The villagers, single and married couples, formed a close community. They raisied families, built a small grocery to combat their being in a food desert, and developed an informal village council, choosing representatives to advocate for their needs with the city. The residents were a welcome part of the NTSTC campus life. By 1960 applications to reside in the village had declined, and the village was closed to make way for new student housing. The newer Bradley Street Apartments were completed in 1961, and demolished in 2006.
